How to Train a Parrot to Use a Travel Carrier
A travel carrier is essential for veterinary visits, emergencies, relocation, and safe transportation. Training before the carrier is urgently needed can turn a stressful event into a familiar routine.
Choose the Right Carrier
The carrier should be secure, well ventilated, easy to clean, and large enough for the bird to stand and turn comfortably. Install an appropriate low perch when safe, and check every latch and fastener. Ask your avian veterinarian about the best setup for your bird’s size and health.
Make the Carrier Familiar
Place the carrier near the regular cage with the door open. Let the parrot observe it without pressure. Add a familiar toy or treat near the entrance, but avoid crowding the interior.
Teach Entry in Small Steps
- Reward the bird for calmly looking at the carrier.
- Reward movement toward the entrance.
- Use target training to guide one step inside.
- Gradually build to entering fully.
- Close the door briefly, reward calm behavior, and reopen it.
Practice Short Indoor Trips
Once the bird enters voluntarily, carry the closed carrier around the room for a few seconds. Gradually increase duration and movement. Keep sessions short and stop before the bird becomes overwhelmed.
Prepare for Vehicle Travel
Secure the carrier so it cannot slide or tip. Keep the vehicle at a comfortable temperature and free from smoke, fragrances, and direct drafts. Never leave a parrot unattended in a parked vehicle.

Do Not Chase or Force the Bird
