Cockatoo Dietary Guide: Plan Meals, Treats and a Safe Food Transition

Build a cockatoo feeding routine around veterinary guidance, balanced foods, clean water and a gradual transition from seed-heavy diets.

A useful cockatoo dietary guide helps you organise feeding and observe what your bird actually eats. Before changing foods, record the current diet and discuss it with an avian veterinarian. Age, body condition, medical history and reproductive activity can affect the plan.

Build the diet around balanced food

VCA’s cockatoo feeding guidance recommends a formulated pellet-based diet, with pellets generally representing about 75–80% of the diet. Fresh produce and appropriate treats complement that foundation. Treat the percentage as general guidance to discuss with your veterinarian, not a prescription for every bird.

A seed-only diet can be nutritionally unbalanced. Seeds and nuts should not displace the balanced foods a cockatoo needs. Ask the veterinarian which formulation, portion and produce choices suit your bird, rather than copying a menu from a different species.

Introduce new foods gradually

A cockatoo may not recognise pellets as food immediately. VCA advises a gradual transition and says not to withdraw seeds completely until the bird is reliably eating replacement foods. Arrange a monitoring plan with the veterinarian and seek help if intake or weight changes. Never use hunger to force acceptance.

Keep bowls and food safe

Provide clean drinking water and wash bowls daily. Wash produce, store food securely and remove perishable leftovers promptly. Avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine and alcohol. Do not add supplements to drinking water unless your veterinarian directs it. The AAV basic-care handout explains these feeding and hygiene principles.

Make the handover specific

Before bringing a cockatoo home, request the exact current food, feeding times and any written veterinary instructions. Prepare familiar food for arrival and keep a simple log to share at the first examination. Pair this dietary plan with our cockatoo daily-care guide and feeding information.
