African Grey Daily-Care Guidelines: Use a Food, Activity and Health Log
Use a simple African Grey observation log to track food intake, activity and changes, then prepare clear questions for your avian veterinarian.
African Grey daily-care guidelines should help you notice changes, not just complete chores. A short observation log can make feeding decisions and veterinary conversations clearer. It also helps different family members provide a consistent routine without relying on memory.
Record what is eaten, not just what is offered
A full food bowl does not show whether the bird is eating a balanced diet. Note foods consumed, favourites left behind and treats given during training. Record the exact food formulation and any changes so you can discuss them at an examination.
VCA’s African Grey feeding guidance identifies nutritional risks associated with seed-heavy diets, including calcium and vitamin A deficiencies. It recommends a balanced diet and gradual food transitions. Do not remove familiar foods abruptly or add calcium and other supplements simply because a bird is an African Grey; ask the veterinarian what the individual needs.
Use a repeatable daily record
| Area | What to write down |
|---|---|
| Meals | Foods offered, foods eaten and training treats. |
| Water and cleaning | When bowls were washed and water replaced. |
| Activity | Interest in familiar activities and any noticeable change. |
| Rest | The household schedule and any unusual disturbance. |
| Weight | Readings taken under the monitoring plan agreed with the veterinarian. |
| Questions | Anything a caregiver needs to clarify. |
Separate preferences from health concerns
A new toy being ignored is an observation to record, not a diagnosis. Reduced eating, a significant weight change or other illness signs need professional advice. If a bird struggles to breathe, collapses or is injured, seek urgent veterinary help rather than waiting to complete the log. Keep your regular clinic and emergency-care details readily available.
Review the log with the whole household
At the end of the week, identify practical changes: were treats recorded consistently, was a meal missed, or did a new routine confuse caregivers? Bring your notes and food packaging information to the veterinarian. The goal is a useful record of this bird, not a perfect-looking diary.
