Where Can I Adopt a Cockatoo, and How Much Will It Cost?
Find cockatoo rescue options, compare current example adoption fees with purchase prices, and prepare an itemised first-year budget.
To adopt a cockatoo, start with an established bird rescue or an animal welfare organisation that places parrots. Ask about its application process, service area, home requirements, and available birds. The rescue fee is only one part of the cost; a workable home routine and an appropriate individual match matter just as much.
Two organisations to contact
Best Friends Animal Society’s cockatoo adoption information and Florida Parrot Rescue provide starting points. Availability and eligibility can change. Ask whether visits, home checks, travel, or a local service-area restriction apply before making plans.
What does cockatoo adoption cost?
As checked October 10, 2026, Best Friends publishes a $200 fee for large parrots, including macaws and cockatoos. Florida Parrot Rescue lists $500 for small cockatoos and $650 for larger cockatoos. These are organisation-specific examples, not a national price range. Florida Parrot Rescue says a bird’s cage is included if that bird has one; ask what is actually supplied.
Adoption fees and purchase prices are different
A rescue placement supports an organisation’s rehoming work. A seller’s purchase price is a different transaction. Our cockatoo category contains purchase listings; those prices should not be presented as rescue fees. Choose the route intentionally and request the relevant written terms.
Create a first-year cost sheet
List the fee or purchase price, enclosure, travel carrier, veterinary appointment, food, replacement toys, transport, and emergency savings separately. Beside each item, record who supplied the quote and its date. Then add recurring monthly expenses. A low placement fee does not make a bird inexpensive to support over time.
Ask about the individual cockatoo
Request its current routine, foods, handling preferences, noise, existing care records, and known behavioural concerns. Ask how the organisation assesses a match and what support exists after placement. Meet the bird if the rescue’s process permits it, and make sure everyone who will provide care understands the commitment.
Before the bird comes home
Prepare familiar food and an appropriate enclosure before collection. Use our parrot cage and food checklist to organise supplies. Contact the rescue directly to reconfirm all fees and conditions; this article does not promise an available bird or approval of an application.
