Choose and prepare a secure carrier for veterinary visits, pickups, short drives, and longer road trips.
Choose the right carrier
A carrier should be strong, ventilated, easy to clean, and appropriately sized. The bird needs room to stand and turn without being thrown across a large space.
Check every latch and seam, avoiding gaps that trap toes or flimsy doors a beak can open.
Set up the interior
Install a low stable perch with good grip. For weak or unsteady birds, ask an avian veterinarian whether a padded floor is safer.
Line the base with plain paper and avoid heavy swinging toys that could strike the bird.
Train before travel day
Leave the carrier near the cage with the door open and reward curiosity. Place treats near the entrance, then inside.
Practice brief door closures, carrying it around the house, and short drives before a longer trip.
Secure it in the vehicle
Use a seat belt or manufacturer-approved restraint so the carrier cannot slide. Keep it away from airbags, direct sun, and strong vents.
Never leave a bird unattended in a vehicle, and avoid smoke, aerosols, fragrances, and loud music.
Pack a travel kit
Bring familiar food, water, paper liners, wipes, a towel, contact information, and needed records. Never open the carrier outdoors during a stop.
