Choosing Safe Perches for African Grey Parrots

Why variety matters
A parrot spends many hours standing, climbing, eating, and sleeping on perches. One smooth dowel forces the feet into the same position all day.
Use a thoughtful mix of sturdy, cleanable shapes and diameters appropriate for the bird.
Natural wood perches
Bird-safe natural branches provide varied texture. Buy from a reputable supplier or confirm the wood species and preparation before using an outdoor branch.
Avoid wood exposed to pesticides, roadside pollution, mold, or wild-bird droppings.
Rope and platform options
Rope perches can be comfortable but require frequent inspection. Remove them as soon as fibers fray. Flat platforms may offer a useful resting option.
Very abrasive perch covers should not be a primary standing surface because they can irritate feet.
Place perches with purpose
Provide a high sleeping perch, stable food-access perches, and climbing routes. Do not position a perch directly over food or water.
Leave enough space for the tail and wings to clear bars and toys without overcrowding the cage.
Inspect feet regularly
Watch for redness, swelling, pressure areas, or a change in grip. Clean soiled perches and replace damaged ones.
